Neroli Essential Oil: A Practitioner’s Guide

Plant Part & Extraction

Steam distilled from the blossoms of the Bitter Orange tree (Citrus aurantium).

Pure Neroli essential oil is incredibly costly because it is highly labor intensive and the blossoms can only be harvested during a very specific time of year.

We offer:

  • Neroli 3% diluted in jojoba oil

  • Pure undiluted Neroli

Even diluted at 3%, Neroli remains extremely potent and effective.

It takes approximately 1,000 pounds of blossoms to produce just 1 pound of Neroli essential oil.

Historical Uses of Neroli Essential Oil

Ancient Egyptians used aromatic blossoms and oils for healing the mind, body, and spirit.

It is not known precisely when or where Neroli essential oil was first extracted by steam distillation, but legend states that during the 17th century in Italy, Anne Marie de la Trémoille (Orsini), Duchess of Bracciano and Princess of Nerola, introduced Neroli oil as a fashionable fragrance among high society.

She used the oil:

  • in baths

  • on stationery

  • on scarves

  • and most famously, to perfume her gloves

The fragrance became highly fashionable throughout Europe.

In 1709, Italian perfumer J.M. Farina created a famous blend containing:

  • neroli

  • bergamot

  • lavender

  • lemon

  • petitgrain

  • rosemary

He named the fragrance “Eau de Cologne,” which helped establish citrus-floral perfumery traditions still recognized today.
