Botanical Origin
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is believed to be a hybrid derived from the pummelo (Citrus maxima) and sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). The pummelo is native to Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Indonesia.
Seeds were brought to the West Indies in 1693 by an English sea captain, often associated with the name “Shaddock.”

Initially called “forbidden fruit” and “smaller shaddock”
Later named “grapefruit” due to cluster-like growth patterns
