Patchouli Essential Oil: A Practitioner’s Guide
Plant Part & Extraction
Patchouli essential oil is steam distilled from the partially dried, fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia.
The leaves are hand-harvested, allowed to partially dry and ferment for several days, then steam distilled. Patchouli is one of the few essential oils that improves with age, much like Frankincense, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, and Vetiver.
Its deep, earthy, musky aroma has made it one of the world's most recognizable essential oils in both aromatherapy and natural perfumery.

Historical Uses of Patchouli
Patchouli has been used throughout Malaysia, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia for centuries, primarily for skin care and traditional herbal wellness.
During the 19th century, Patchouli became famous as a natural moth repellent. Fabrics exported from India were scented with Patchouli to protect them during shipping, and the aroma soon became associated with authentic Oriental textiles. European manufacturers even scented imitation fabrics with Patchouli to imitate imported goods.
In modern times, Patchouli became closely associated with the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s, earning a reputation that often overshadowed its long history of medicinal and perfumery use.
Today, Patchouli remains one of the most important base notes in natural perfumery because it slows the evaporation of lighter oils, allowing fragrances to last much longer.
