Palo Santo Essential Oil: A Practitioner’s Guide

Plant Part & Extraction

Palo Santo essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of Bursera graveolens, commonly known as Holy Wood.

Traditionally, the tree must die naturally and remain on the forest floor for at least two years before the aromatic compounds fully develop within the heartwood. The wood is then harvested and distilled to produce this treasured oil.

Approximately 9 kilograms of aged wood chips or sawdust produce about 500 mL of essential oil, making Palo Santo a labor-intensive and highly valued oil.

Native to South America, particularly Ecuador and Peru, Palo Santo has been used for centuries in spiritual ceremonies, energy clearing, and traditional wellness practices.

Historical Uses of Palo Santo

The use of Palo Santo has deep roots in South American traditions and dates back to the time of the Inca civilization.

According to traditional customs in Ecuador and Peru, Palo Santo was burned to help clear "mala energía" (negative energy), promote good fortune, and create spiritual protection.

Shamans and healers traditionally used the smoke during ceremonies and healing rituals to cleanse spaces, support emotional well-being, and encourage spiritual connection.

Palo Santo wood continues to be used today as a sacred incense, while the essential oil is often applied aromatically or topically to encourage relaxation and meditation.

In Peru, harvesting of Palo Santo is regulated, and traditionally only naturally fallen branches and trees are collected.
